Whenever I visit temples, I always have this idea that a temple here is always just one building. And it never fails to surprise me just how large a typical temple really is. I think this more true for the older temples which are built not very differently from palaces. More modern temples have less space to work with so they are a little smaller. The Chongsheng Temple was built in the 9th century and is certainly considered quite old. It thus, surprised to me know just how big the temple grounds actually were.
The Chongsheng Temple stretches from the highway all the way to the foot of the Cangshan Mountains at the back. It is quite long and I have an hour to go through all of that. I know this is my fault since I still decided to continue on exploring the temple but I didn’t want to waste any time since all I know about Dali are the Three Pagodas. If there really isn’t anything else here, I would rather leave the next day. I was still making my way to the next hall which was surprisingly far away. They really made use of the space to build the Chongsheng Temple, I am impressed.
