It is said that one of China’s most photographed sceneries is at Black Dragon Pool. Why is this so? It is hard to argue when you have perfect combination of snow capped mountains, traditional Chinese architure and water all in one photo. True enough, I can say that this is one of the most beautiful postcard photos you can ever take. However, this comes with a big caveat. The conditions must be right to be able to get this shot. It is better to come during the colder months of October or November that way the sky will be clearer. Enabling you to see the faraway mountains. Not only that, but you also need to have enough water in the pool itself. Make sure the pool is deep enough reflect the scenery above.
Unfortunately for me, I would not be so lucky. I came at the rainy season which made cloud cover so thick that I can’t see the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain 玉龙雪山 which serves as the lovely backdrop to the Black Dragon Pool. Not only was the mountain not visible, but the waters levels of the Black Dragon Pool was also dangerously low. There were signs of drought on the bed of the pool which doesn’t make for a good photo either. This was a very disappointing visit to say the least, I got the spot already but I have neither water nor mountain, maybe I really need to visit during the colder months. Hopefully conditions will be better.
