Honestly, I was quite shocked at how low the water levels where at the Black Dragon Pool. To think that this happened ina major tourist attraction in China. The Black Dragon Pool is one of China’s most photographed sights. It is right beside the Lijiang Ancient Town it is major tourist destination by itself. The sights to see here is the beautiful pool here with the pavillion and snow capped mountains as the background. Unfortunately, for me, out of those three, I probably only have to settle for the pavillion. The mountain was nowhere in sight, as too much clouds have obscured the view, this is understandable as this time of the month wasn’t exactly best for viewing the mountain. However the Black Dragon Pool itself is another matter.
The pool was almost empty and the water level was so low you can see the cracked ground very clearly. It seems that the water here at the pool just came very recently since practically all of the floor was cracked. This was a sure sign of drought which has struck the area recently. I didn’t know how bad it was until I saw it myself. It also seems that the depletion of groundwater here at Lijiang has exacerbated the situation. I was truly saddened at what I saw, not only for myself since I won’t be able to get my nice photos but for the place as well. This place is very well known and the fact the place was named after the pool speaks volumes on how the important water is too this place. It was quite ironic since Lijiang Ancient Town has lots of flowing water running through the town, maybe they can direct some of that water to the pool. I just hope that it won’t be too late for the pool.
