Lijiang Ancient Town in Yunnan province is certainly one of the province’s most popular tourist attractions. Its stature as a UNESCO World Heritage site has only boosted it popularity to foreigners, while not coming in droves like the Chinese but you can definitely see them. I seemed to have visited two contrasting ancient town, Dukezong was a slow moving ancient town but Lijiang has the vibe of a shopping center with a lot of thing happening everywhere. Lijiang is certainly the prettier of the two but Dukezong has more of the ancient town feel if you are looking for that. Lijiang Ancient Town was elevated to the UNESCO World Heritage Site list only underscores its beauty and it still worth a visit.
To properly visit Lijiang Ancient Town, you would need your map and try to wake up earlier in the day. At this point in the day, tour groups still haven’t gotten up yet and you could still have the entire town to yourself. However, you have to remember that a lot of the shops here also cater to those tour groups. If there are no tour groups, there won’t be any point to open so early. Depending on how you look at this, this may be a positive or a negative. Lijiang also serves as a good base for exploring the surrounding area. Actually, that was the reason why I was here in the first place, though I have been spending my time just exploring the town, I do plan of seeing some of the sights around the town.
