The town of Shangrila in Yunnan province doesn’t really have much to offer. This is not to say that this place isn’t worth visiting. The number one attraction here would have to be the Songzanlin Temple but other sights here are all outside the town. So getting to Shangrila is a perfect step to start the exploration of this area. I already got my first proper sleep since I got to China. Travelling all the way here to the edge of the Himalayas isn’t easy but to the ones willing to go, there is a lot to see here. I doubt I would be able to explore this area by myself, I would probably do a sampler and come back again, hopefully with friends. For now, it is on to my first destination.
The best place to start exploring Shangrila’s surroundings is the bus station. The bus station at Shangrila shows all the destinations the buses here go to and it makes a very convient travel planning tool. The bus station of Shangrila isn’t very modern. People were even smoking inside the station without any care to the non-smoking folk, probably doesn’t hurt us. My trip would take me to a place known as Baitaishui or White Water Terrace 白台水. The bus was heading towards another place but it passed by Baitaishui. The bus wasn’t full which was good for me. At least those guys didn’t smoke inside the bus, there were toilet breaks in between so there was no reason for them to do so.
