The ancient town of Dukezong is pleasant enough. It doesn’t have the flowing water or a Lijiang but the mere fact that there it isn’t beseiged by hordes of tourists is already a huge plus for me. It seems that it is quite incredible that my mind failed to fully grasp it. In my travels around China, there is hardly any town or tourist spot which is not overflowing with tourists. I guess this place was really not really promoted a lot. Could it be to promote the image of Shangrila or Shambhala the authorities toned down the promotions?
Situated on a mountain makes it doubly hard for people to come here. It is not advisable to come here by plane since your body has even less time to adjust to the thinner air. There are flights from Kunming but I would advise against it. At night it is a great place to walk around with all the shops lit up. I don’t really plan on buying anything here but who knows.
