It was a bit of a travesty that the financial center of China is not Beijing but rather Shanghai. This was somewhat of a strange situation for the government but it is in fact not uncommon. New York, Munich and Frankfurt are all financial centers and yet are not capital cities. The pride of Beijing will not be pricked as they moved heaven and earth to attract big businesses to setup headquarters in the city. Part of this effort is Beijing emerging Central Business District.
As of the last visit. The area has already been quite built up, but there was still a lot of room for development. The China Central Television Headquarters is one of the signature buildings in the area together with the World Trade Center among other buildings. The Central Business District although is a work in progress already has quite a few places to see such as upscale malls and office buildings. I would expect that this would soon be quite an expensive place to be in in the next few years.
