I was pleasantly surprised to see a rather old looking Catholic Church in Pingyao Ancient Town. The walls of the church were built such that it blends with with the rather of the ancient town, except that its architecture leaves little doubt that it is a Catholic Church. I didn’t get any information on the age of the church but I find it unlikely that the church was there from the very beginning. I also find it difficult to believe that the church was recently constructed.
Unfortunately, there was no one in the premises to tell me how old this church was. The door was open but there was no one in either. The church seems to be in active service though since the pews were clean and the altar seems to be maintained. There were Chinese characters on the altar area but I didn’t really try to understand them. There was a map of Pingyao county which I believe the church has responsibility over. I don’t know how large or small the Catholic community of Pingyao is, but I believe they are there even though I can’t see them.
