City God Main Temple in Pingyao 平遥

Much like the other temples I have visited in China. The City God Temple’s layout is no different from ther others. The temple here is much smaller though since there isn’t as much space here. However, it still contains the traditional layering that is found in most Chinese temples. The first layer is usually a gate while there will be a succession of halls before reaching the main hall. There is usually one final hall behind the main hall, but the City God Temple didn’t seem to have one of its own.

I have finally reached the main temple of the temple grounds and there was no one here. Right in front of the temple was an incense burner with hardly any incense on it. Maybe they clear it every morning. Right there at the main temple was the statue of the city god himself, sitting much like an emperor. Then again, emperors were also regarded as gods during their time. Little distinguishes this city god temple from the other city god temples which I have visited. Then again this temple is also hundreds of years old, it is still worth a visit.
