It seems that there is an obligatory City God Temple in every old Chinese town. The ancient town of Pingyao has a City God Temple as one of its “must see” sights. These sights are usually closed off with an entrance gate where paying visitors can just scan their ticket to have a look. The City God Temple is my first stop that day in my whole day of exploration of the “must see” sights of the ancient town. The sky was still dark and it was drizzling but not enough to keep me out.
It appears that the ancient town of Pingyao is like several mansions bunched together to form a city. Large compounds like the City God Temple are prime examples of this. These compounds would take up large chunks of the street block, it is just as well since it is a temple after all. This temple was dedicated to the god who protects the city. It was still quite early in the day and it seems that I will be the first one in the temple.
