I didn’t feel like exploring the roughly sixteem “must see” sights of Pingyao and I scheduled to do it the next day. The rainy weather didn’t help much either, hopefully the weather will be better the following day. In the meantime, the sun has set and I was getting hungry. Come to think of it, I hardly ate that day. I was so busy trying to get from one place to another that I missed having a proper meal. I was on the lookout for a nice place or at least a decent place to eat here in Pingyao but I noticed that the menus all look alike. Even the prices are alike. Price control? Most probably, since the food here wasn’t cheap.
I ended up going in one of the more well known guest houses here in Pingyao, the Harmony Guesthouse. The people here are exceeding friendly, so much that I decided to move in here the following day. This was in complete contrast to the lackluster welcome I got from Zhengjia Hotel where I was staying. Like most of the guest houses here, they also have their own restaurant. The restaurant features food which are specific to Pingyao, but they also have western food for people not accustomed to these kinds of food. I opted for the Pingyao specialty food. They prepared a Pingyao beef with rice dish for me. This was supposedly a specialty of Pingyao. The meat was nice and tender and was a bit sweet. It was something like braised beef but looks like ham. I spent the rest of the night chatting up with the people from Harmony Guesthouse and honing my Chinese.
