Nurhachi’s Palace in the Imperial Palace in Shenyang was as bare as it could be. This is in total contrast to the nearby palaces which tried to cram as many structures as they can within the limited space. Emperor Qianlong’s improvements to the palace came the last since the palace in Shenyang lost it position as the imperial palace when the Qing moved the capital to Beijing. The palace in Shenyang did continue to receive improvement during Qianlong’s time. He naturally stayed here whenever he makes the long journey from Beijing to Shenyang.
Qianlong’s improvements to the palace were made at the peripheries of Huang Taiji’s palace. Eventually, he had a completely new block constructed for him. The most prominent building in the this block was the Wensu Tower. As the name implies it is higher than the other buildings, in this case, it was built two stories high, the others were merely single story high. The buildings here weren’t that much different from the other buildings in the area. Probably it was because Qianlong also made improvements in other parts of the palace.
