Probably one of the more impressive tombs I have seen in China was the General’s Tomb here in Ji’an City which was part of the ruins of the Koguryo Kingdom. The General’s Tomb is reminiscent of the pyramids found in the more famous pyramid building cultures such was Egypt and the Mayans. In this case, the pyramid was a step pyramid which wasn’t really that tall by the similarities are striking. It was also interesting to note that the purpose of the pyramid was also similar. There wasn’t just the General’s Tomb here in the park. Just nearby the big pyramid is the his wife’s tomb.
The name might be a misnomer since it wasn’t really a general that was buried here. The General’s Wife’s Tomb isn’t as grand as the General’s Tomb. While the General’s Tomb was made up of carefully cut stone. The General’s Wife’s Tomb only has a little of that and the rest was made of rougher stone. The tomb was also not as tall as the General’s Tomb only as tall as a person. The burial chamber can be clearly seen from eye level although the was nothing there either. I don’t really know the story behind this, it could be that the wife was also just as respected, or probably just that since they were a couple they should also stay near each other in death.
