It was already almost winter time when I visited the Wandu Mountain City in Ji’an City, Jilin Province. Somehow I was still hoping that I would still be able to catch some of the fall colors especially when I visit the mountains. However, it seem that the time was already long past and much of the trees have already shed their leaves. Instead I was met with a generally dreary brown color from the nearby trees to the mountains surrounding the Wandu Mountain City. There were a handful of people living in this mountain, surprising since it was supposed to be a protected area. In fact, I saw a cow along the way to the the mountain.
There were some plantations in the area but I doubt much would grow in this kind of weather. At least they don’t need much to provide for themselves. This must have been how the people of the Wandu Mountain City survived, although it was much busier than it was almost two thousand years ago. The difficult terrain, intentionally chosen because of its defendability made it also difficult for the residents to get there. However, this didn’t stop the enemies of the Korguyo Kingdom from destroying this fortress as well, leading the kingdom to flee to Pyongyang, which became the capital of today’s North Korea.
