As mentioned in the previous post, I wasn’t exactly enjoying my last dinner in Haerbin. The Kill Pig Dish 杀猪菜 wasn’t as tasty as I hoped to be. I was more into the salty spicy kind of food and this dish was neither. I don’t think I will be able to finish it anyway since it was quite plentiful. Afterall I don’t expect people to be queuing up for solified pig blood. Maybe it will help to replenish the blood I lost in my desk job. To help relieve the disappointment, I ordered another Haerbin staple – beer.
I am not really a beer person but once in a while I would get myself a bottle or two, usually with friends. The urge to drink was even more powerful since Haerbin sells its own brand of beer, aptly named Harbin Beer or 哈啤 or Hapi. The brewery which produces Harbin Beer, Harbin Brewery, is China’s oldest. It was founded in 1900 by a Russian, eventually the love of beer has spread to the Chinese people and it is now the fourth largest brewery in China. Harbin Beer is by far the most popular beer in northeastern China.
Again I’m not a beer person and apart from a few beers, they all taste the same to me, some more bitter than the others. This post will not attempt to be an expert review of Harbin Beer either. Amusingly, the beer here is not cold, as the Chinese aren’t really particularly fond of cold drinks. It would not be easy to find cold drinks here. Anyway, I could probably stick the beer bottle outside and wait for the weather to chill it. At least it helps to wash away some of the Kill Pig Dish taste.
