The Saint Alekseyev Church in Nangang district is located in the more respected streets in Haerbin. Guogeli Avenue 果戈理大街 is is known as one of the better commercial areas in Haerbin. Back then, the Russians of Haerbin would be settling down here in large numbers. A lot of their residences can still be seen here. The Guogeli Avenue is named after Russian novelist and writer Nikolai Gogol. The name “Guogeli” is the transliteration of “Gogol” into Chinese. After the Russians left, the local government didn’t see a need to change the old name so it stayed.
Guogeli Avenue has a nice charm to it. It is an avenue so there will be vehicles travelling and keeping out of that Russian Haerbin dream. The street is well maintained and there are even dedicated street lamps to lend that Russian/European feel. Around the area of Saint Alekseyev church there wasn’t much activity going on. I believe most of the interesting part of this street is on the way back to Daoli district. Still is was quite interesting to walk down this street with all the European style buildings still intact. I didn’t get to walk here at night so I wasn’t sure how it looks like.
