I still have half a day left for exploring Haerbin and I decided to continue on my exploration, but I didn’t know where to go yet, so I decided to head back to the hostel in the meantime, since I will be taking my transport around that area. It was already lunch time and I was looking afor a place to eat. I wasn’t really very familiar with Heilongjiang’s specialty food so I was just walking along one of the side streets when I saw this uniquely named place Mao Mao Smoked Meat 毛毛熏肉.
As the name implies, it specializes in smoked meat which, as it turns out, is a natural to have in the frigid weather of this region. I ordered a portion of their specialty, their smoked meat of course along with some pancakes. I believe the smoked meat they gave me was beef but who can say? The smoked beef portion was quite generous and I was thinking I might not have enough pancake to eat it with. The idea is to stuff the meat inside the pancake and put some onion in it and them some sauce. This reminds me a lot of how to eat Peking duck.
The pancake stuffed with smoked meat is a delight to eat, the meat is salty as can be expected of smoke meat but it was still tender to the bite. Thankfully enough, the pancakes were warm. I wasn’t sure if this is the way to eat it normally, though smoked meat is normally considered “cooked” so there was no need to heat it up. The sauce adds more flavor and balances the salt taste of the meat. In the end there was really a lot more meat than pancake but no worries, I liked the meat and I was glad I had it.
