There wasn’t much to do at Sophia Square at night, there were a few shopping malls in the area but I didn’t want to lose my sense of direction by walking around in a mall. I retraced my steps back to Zhongyang Street. At this point, the way back to Zhongyang Street was already brightly lit and it is filled with pedestrians. However, that was just a preview of the main event.
Zhongyang Street was just as brightly lit and it looks fantastic. I saw photos of this street on the internet and was enamored with the night scene. Somehow it was more attractive than the ones at Shanghai and Beijing. One difference here is that Zhongyang Street is much narrower than pedestrian shopping street heavyweights like Shanghai’s Nanjing Road East and Beijing’s Wangfujing.
Perhaps it is this precisely this narrower street which makes it more alluring, more real than the others, which on the other hand feel more like a converted street. The buildings on Zhongyang Street are for the most part smaller as well. This in turn highlights the natural beauty of the architecture of these buildings for which Haerbin is famous for.
Not surprisingly, there were a lot of people walking about in Zhongyang Street, it was a weekend after all and it is probably one of their favorite pasttimes since this is probably the best place to walk about at night. I wholeheartedly agree with them.
