Sophia Square is undoubtedly Haerbin’s most important landmark. I remember when I was telling my friend about visiting Haerbin just because I saw photos of this square, she mentioned that the square is just about all there is to see in Haerbin itself. I’m a big fan of architecture and visiting this place will be a delight for me. Since it was already dark, lights abound in Sophia Square. The most important structure in this square is undoubtedly the church itself which glows like a jewel in the night, more on that later.
Sophia Square also has other structures, one which caught my eye was this steel structure which reminded me of a old school train station. There was no information on what it was supposed to be. There was a tower off to the side but there was no clock. There was an underground passage just beside it, presumably linked to a mall underneath the square. Maybe it is a new structure. There were also other buildings surrounding the square but they were all commercial. There was supposed to be a dancing fountain here but I didn’t see any of the sort. Maybe because it was already too cold? Sophia Square is certainly a great place to appreciate the heritage architecture of Haerbin but there is little to do here unless you plan to visit the nearby shopping malls.
