The stretch of Zhongyang Street abruptly ends near a major street. They obviously can’t afford to close down that street which was a shame since it leads directly to the river. However, there is still a way to cross the street from here. They built a large underground passage to cross the street. This underpass was special as it seemed to be extra wide. I believe a lot of events happen in this area and they need to ensure that there is enough space for people to move, although I think there is still not enough space for them.
The underpass was likewise specially designed, it is brighly lit but ceiling lights and there are other passages at the bottom. There seemed to be an underground shopping center here as there were signs pointing to its direction. I think they build these underground to keep the economy going during the winter where everything freezes over. Underground there is heating and it is quite toasty. It is not unheard of for shopping centers which go two or three stories underground.
