Colorful Garden in the Humble Administrator's Garden 拙政园
Throughout the centuries, Suzhou was known throughout the Middle Kingdom for its beautiful gardens. This is interesting since The Jiangnan region is known to be one of the most beautiful places in the country. The combination of water and mountains all make for this region to be one of the most desirable. Not surprisingly, a lot of people settled in this area, no doubt inspired by the beauty of the surrounding countryside, the people took to owning a piece of the scenery themselves. As a result, numerous gardens sprouted in Suzhou, each one grander than the other.
A Train of People at the Humble Administrator's Garden 拙政园
These gardens are a microcosms of the surrounding scenery, after all, why go to the lake when you have one in your own backyard? This type of mentality is also prevalent in emperors who tend to build their own little Jiangnan’s in the cold north, the most significant of which as the Summer Palace in Beijing and the Mountain Resort in Chengde. The Humble Administrator’s Garden is the most significant of the gardens of Suzhou and one of the few surviving ones as the rest have succumbed to modernity. Fortunately, this place isn’t as massive as the Summer Palace, or why there wouldn’t be a need to call the administrator humble.
