After Dinner Karaoke at Suzhou Times Square

Entering the KTV

Entering the KTV

Before we left for China, my friend was telling me how we would be meeting up with some people in Suzhou. I didn’t really think of it that much since I also meet up with people whenever I can. She did warn me that we might be going for karaoke in Suzhou. Well, dinner is over and time for karaoke is nigh. It just so happens that the Suzhou times Square also has a karaoke place, with the amusing name of 我型我秀量贩KTV or I Sing, I Show KTV. Probably one of that largest I have ever been to. It seems our very gracious hosts are avid karaoke fans as they also have a membership card.

The karaoke place is the first I have been to in China, the first dedicated one anyway, I have been to one inside a restaurant in Shenzhen. It was very modern and has a very youthful feel to it. I was surprised to see the karaoke rooms as it has a large LCD TV for singing, naturally. There were lights on the walls which you can control too. And it can give you that superstar feeling, or sleazy bar kind of feel depending on the mood of the lighting. I can’t really comment much on the song selection since most of them were in Chinese.

I had to dig very deep into my bag of old Chinese songs to be able to participate in the singing. After all, they paid for this. I must say though, that everyone in the room was shocked when I started belting out Chinese songs. I only know a handful of them so it was best to go with the ones I know best. Naturally, there were a lot of slip ups but I think it was still decent (doesn’t everybody think that way?). The room also came with a massive teddy bear for playing, our host managed to borrow this from the management. I guess he is a regular here.

Unfortunately, the room was only rented for a fixed time limit and just when I was getting excited picking some more songs, it was time to go. Well, it was just as well, it was already past midnight and the others still need to work the next day. Our host had one final gift for us, he arranged for his friend to drive us back to the hostel area. She wasn’t familiar with the place so she used GPS to assist her. It took her a few turns for the GPS to correctly orient itself but she was able to bring us back to the hostel. It was a wonderful evening and I was glad I came along for the fun. I don’t think I would be able to enjoy this if I was travelling alone. Another good thing about this was my friend probably has more respect for my Chinese singing skills now.
