The person we were supposed to meet can’t seem to make it to the area we were at. It was downtown and traffic here is horrible because of the ongoing construction of their brand new metro. However, that is still years away. So residents and tourists should have be bear with the horrendous traffic in the meantime. Our hostel was at the old town of Suzhou and we would need to meet them somewhere outside and supposedly walking distance from the hostel. This gives us an opportunity to explore the rest of Suzhou. My friends don’t seem to be the type who would venture far away from the tourist area just to get somewhere else so I think this is a great opportunity.
When viewed from above, the old town of Suzhou is surrounded by a rectangle of water Waichenghe 外城河, reminding people of its water town roots. The water is still here and very much alive. However, much of the city has grown beyond the this body of water and it is criss-crossed by numerous bridges. We needed to cross the bridge to get to the meeting point. The streets of Suzhou weren’t that brightly lit and reminded me of walking in the streets of Manila at night. The bridge spans the Waichenghe and gives us a great view of the surrounding area. There seemed to be a brightly lit part on the other side of the river and it looks like we were heading there. Time to check it out.
