There are a number of well preserved or restored houses here in Zhou Zhuang, it will take a whole day to explore all these places but we only have a few hours to spare here. My friends didn’t really have an itinerary in mind when we came to Zhouzhuang, as they practically just made Zhouzhuang the destination itself. We were left to wander around the grounds of the village, which was really not bad at all. The last time I was here I was able to cover quite a few places but having other people with you can slow you down. Our destination is Yuyan Hall 玉燕堂.
I can’t say that I have been to Yuyan Hall, it is also called Zhang’s House. I have been to a few houses here in Zhou Zhuang, but somehow this one didn’t seem to stick. Probably because they tend to look alike. Yuyan Hall apparently is one of the more significant places here in Zhouzhuang. It is actually more than 500 years old! You probably won’t realize this when you enter the place since it is not falling apart at all. No doubt the tourism industry has played its part in keeping the place up and running all these centuries.
