We had a little more time before dinner so we needed to first make sure that we have a place to stay for the night. Just like me, my friends also booked their using the Hostelling International group of hostels. They actually booked their rooms first, and since I only decided to come to Hangzhou much later, I got a dorm bed instead, not that they would ever let me stay in their room. I previously stayed at the Hangzhou Mingtown International Youth Hostel which was a great location since it was right along the shores of the West Lake. The Wushanyi International Youth Hostel on the other hand also has a great location right at the old street area of Hangzhou, which was still within walking distance of the lake.
The Wushanyi International Youth Hostel fortunately, wasn’t right smack in the shopping street, instead is was tucked in a nice quiet little street not too far from the shopping street that is Hefang Street 河坊街. The hostel recently moved and thus the interiors were still very fresh and new. It was a great experience to just walk in the hostel and you could be forgiven if you thought the entrance was some sort of fancy coffee place. The staff were friendly and there was free towels to be borrowed.
The dorm room was nice and bright. It was a bit small though but it suffices for the purpose. There were lockers inside the rooms to keep your stuff, though I never found the need to use them since I was bringing all I needed with me. There was this Canadian guy who somehow got screwed over by someone he needed to meet in China and was kinda lost. He wasn’t particularly fond of the local Chinese food and I left wondering why did he ever decide to come to China in the first place.
Although the Wushanyi International Youth Hostel is not by the West Lake, it is still in a great location here in Hangzhou. At night, its great location really shines since this is where people would most likely end up. The long row of restaurants is just nearby and most importantly shopping. The facilities at the Wushanyi International Youth Hostel are brand new and I would definitely prefer this than the one with Mingtown. Although, Mingtown was in the process of renovating, I hope it has gotten better now.
