One important component of the the Lingyin-Feilai Feng Scenic Area is Feilai Feng itself. The most important feature of Feilai Feng is the numerous Buddhist sculptures scattered throughout the mountain. The name Feilai Feng 飞来峰 means Flying Peak. Mountain is made of limestone and is distinctly different from the surrounding mountains. It was said to have come from India and flew here, hence the name. Due to its proximity to the Lingyin Temple, Buddhist sculptures can be seen throughout the mountains. Unfortunately, my friend wasn’t really keen on climbing a mountain, though I was dying to do so. The mountain wasn’t very high to begin with, I’m sure she would have been able to handle it.
The Feilai Feng Grottoes resemble the other Buddhist grottoes found in China such as the one in Dazu 大足 in Sichuan province, however there wasn’t as much detail here as compared to Dazu. One important distinction between Feilai Feng and Dazu was that the sculptures here were made of limestone as compared to the sandstone of Dazu. There are numerous flights of stairs dotting the mountain and it would be fun to exploring this interesting cultural relic. However, it seems we will be staying close to the ground for now. It will have to see what we can see from here.
