China is one of the world oldest continuous civilizations. Its history goes back thousands of years. A lot inventions have been credited to China. However, it is their uses of these inventions that will be the most interesting. The history of man is divided into ages which is defined by the dominant technology at that time. One of these ages was the Bronze Age, which usually comes after the Stone age in most cultures. The Bronze age of China probably started more than 5000 years ago, around 3000 BC, that is certainly a long time ago, but when a culture’s history goes back that long, it is a testament to the durability of that civilization.
As you know, bronze is a metal which has various uses. The first uses of such material normally come first in the kitchen. The Shanghai Museum showcases the various bronze relics from over the millenia. On display were numerous bronze utensils primarily ones used for holding liquids, perhaps water or alcohol. In true Chinese fashion, these bronze vessels became increasingly ornate in their appearances. Naturally, only the wealthy can afford to purchase such luxurious items.
The bronze works during this period reflected much of the prevailing history and culture at that time. Most of the time, creatures from everyday life such as ox or horses would adorn the vessels. Other times creatures from mythology would be seen. The artisans of the time were extremely skilled and it really makes you wonder how much progress has actually been made in this regard. If I look at my drinking cup, they are mostly cheap and not very durable ones. Do you think your plastic cup would be able to last a hundred years? Let alone five thousand years?
