I wasn’t really planning to visit Shanghai this time around but a good friend of mine convinced me to change my plans. I have actually booked my hostel stay by that time she let me know that we would be in China at the same period of time. Actually, that wasn’t really a big deal since I only needed to book dorm beds again. There was a minor reservation fee involved but didn’t really cost much. My friend booked her own room, she was with another friend, I guess she need a bodyguard thinking that China was unsafe. They have their double room and I booked my usual dorm bed.
I am no longer a stranger to dorm rooms as I was practically living off dorms room during my entire stay the previous year. I stayed at the Shanghai Captain International Youth Hostel, on the other side of the Bund. The Mingtown Hiker International Youth Hostel seemed to be a little more accessible to Nanjing East Road, which was only a few blocks away. Additionally there were a little bit more eating places here as I found out the next day.
Probably standard already with Chinese dorm rooms, the room was small but clean. The beds were properly kept and dorm occupants have their own lockers to keep their valuables. I didn’t really use it that much as I pretty much left my stuff lying all over the place. The bathroom was down the hall and it was quite nice. Strangely enough the toilets were in a different area and the wash basins were in another. I guess it is to prevent overcrowding during peak hours.
The hostel was a bar downstairs where there were noisy foreigners watching English football. There was two computers here for surfing and if you have your own machine, you can just hop on their wi-fi. The upper floors were much quieter with small common areas near the stairs where you can read of just hang around.
I would have to say that I like this hostel much more than the Shanghai Captain International Youth Hostel, which was basically an old apartment building turned hostel. The bathing area and the toilet facilities are much better maintained. The staff was far nicer and friendlier than the snobby staff at Shanghai Captain International Youth Hostel. The location is also top notch as it is just a few blocks away from Nanjing East Road. The next time I drop by Shanghai, I will definitely stay here.
