To be honest, I didn’t know much about the West Lake 西湖 which is so famous across China, I remember it being discussed in Chinese geography but that was it. Little did I know that I would be visiting it one day. The Mingtown Hangzhou International Youth Hostel is located at the banks of the famous lake and it makes is extremely convenient to explore this picturesque area. First I need to get my bearings, I went back to the main road, and the first thing I noticed was that the road was quite pretty. There were tall trees which shade the entire street which reminiscent of the streets of Chengdu.
I realized that Hangzhou is actually quite a pleasant place to visit and stay in. There is this relaxing atmosphere that permeates the city. This atmosphere is most felt in the West Lake area which is a major tourist destination here. As it happened, the West Lake area turned out to be a UNESCO World Heritage site. I normally try to visit these places but West Lake was never one of my targets because it wasn’t one at the time of research. I only found out literally a few days ago that it was elevated to that status just this year.
