Nanjing Road is Shanghai premier shopping street. It is still early in the day so there isn’t really much shopping going on at the moment. This suits me fine as there are less people to run into. When compared to other great shopping streets like Orchard Road in Singapore, Nanjing Road feels much more Chinese, much like how Wangfujing in Beijing felt to me when I was there. There weren’t a lot of western style shopping malls here but rather some dreary old school department stores.
The side streets near Nanjing Road are also worth a look as they offer a glimpse of life in Shanghai away from the glitz of Nanjing Road. Sometimes it is hard to believe that their number one shopping street is just a block away since some parts look like some small Chinese town. Here you can see shops selling ordinary stuff of the local people, not for the tourist crowd.
