The water village of Zhou Zhuang is permeated with numerous streams which go around the entire town. Not surprisingly, one of the most popular modes of transportation here is the taking a boat ride. Okay, most of the locals don’t really do this anymore since they have bridges and walkways to go around the village, however, this beautiful tradition has endured across the centuries. It is very atmospheric to go around the centuries old village by boat.
Much like a gondolier does, the boatman also sings here in Zhou Zhuang, maybe it is a job requirement. I couldn’t really understand what the boatman was singing as it sounded to be some old Chinese song. I didn’t even know if it was sung in a dialect. Either way, it only increases the ambience here. It makes you forget that you are among thousands of tourists here in Zhou Zhuang. By the way, I didn’t try the boat ride as it wasn’t my thing.
