Zhou Zhuang is a small town in the Chinese province of Jiangsu, just outside the city of Shanghai. It is a delightful little town which is known as a water village 水乡. One look in the village and you will see why it was called so. The entire town is crisscrossed by numerous canals and streams. The village is not built on top of the water though so it is not a floating village. Due to the town’s proximity to Shanghai, it is a very popular weekend destination for the locals. As a result, there were loads of tourists in the town.
I was bracing myself for a flood of tourists here in the town and I was wasn’t disappointed. The parking lot was already an indication of how much I would be encountering here. The problem with this place is that the streets here are very narrow and with the amount of people traffic here, it can get really crowded especially on weekends. It is such a shame since the village seems to be quite idyllic.
