After that very satisfying Shanghainese meal, it was time to part ways with my friend in Shanghai, he has a family here and obviously won’t be able to go around Shanghai at night with me. He has an idea where I stay and showed me where the bus stop was. It was still quite early and I wanted to explore Shanghai a little more. Little did I know I would get my wish. I missed my stop and got off at the other side of the Huangpu River, which incidentally was where I was meaning to go to on this trip.
I was dropped at the ultramodern district of Lujiazui 陆家嘴 which is Shanghai’s financial center. It lies directly across the Bund and its skyscrapers dominate the skyline in this area. It is just part of the massive Pudong new area where more and more skyscrapers are being built. Some of the world’s tallest buildings happen to be here. I have seen numerous photos of modren China and more often than not, they would be photos of this area. Such is the pace of development here 20 years ago, no one would consider this a financial center, what a difference 20 years can make.
