Chinese people love shopping and it shows in the way cities are designed. More often than not you may find yourself in one of many shopping streets. The city of Shanghai is certainly no exception to this. There are only a few shopping streets in China which are known outside of the country one is Wangfujing 王府井 in Beijing and the other is Nanjing Road in Shanghai. Nanjing Road is conveniently connected to the Bund which makes it a very convenient location to explore Shanghai on foot.
Parts of Nanjing Road are closed to vehicular traffic so people can enjoy shopping more without worrying about oncoming cars. Just like the Bund, Nanjing Road also has its own fair share of colonial era buildings. However, as one walks along the road, they seem to get replaced by more modern malls or shopping centers. The large number of people milling about is already a given since this is the place to be. Naturally, where the people are, the touts would also follow, so expect them to come in droves. One tip, pretend they do not exist.
