We came to Hongcun on a package tour offered by the hostel as it was the most cost effective way to visiting the two places. I got a small discount since I told them that I had already visited Xidi 西递 and just wanted to have lunch with them. As a result of the warning which our tour guide gave, everybody was back at the bus at the designated time and place. I wasn’t really very pleased with Hongcun and felt that Xidi was the better village. Although both villages look alike, Xidi seemed to have more charm.
Our bus took less than an hour to get to Xidi as it was really nearby and on the way back to Tunxi 屯溪. Once again, our tour guide gave us some guidelines in visiting Xidi and what we were supposed to do there. First we needed to do lunch this is where my special arrangement comes in. The tour guide specifically pointed out to the entrance gate people that I will be leaving after eating but I don’t think they care. We all walked in the village and waited for everyone to get there.
