Crossing the Moon Lake 月沼

The ancient villages of Anhui province tend to live harmoniously with nature and their intimate connection with water only emphasizes that fact. Just like Xidi 西递, Hongcun 宏村 has a network of canals which carry water throughout the village. It is amazing how the village managed to keep the water clean. I guess it is their awareness of the importance of this water which compel them to do this. Moon Lake is probably the most significant body of water here in Hongcun, and it is the first thing you would see in Hongcun.

Moon Lake isn’t actually a lake, it might be more accurate to call it a pond as it is really that small. Most of the runoff water from the village ends up here and yet it doesn’t seem filthy. The water here is probably used for agriculture as this place is still primarily agricultural. There is a bridge which crosses Moon Lake but it is a bit narrow for the traffic that crosses it daily. I wanted to take a photo of the bridge but there were just too many people there.
