Like any other place, water is important to the survival of any community. Perhaps more than other places, the water here in Xidi ancient town is particularly important. The entire town is traversed by countless canals built beside the houses which is where the people get the water for their use. Planks are built to cross the canals to get to other places such as inside the house. The canals are not the type of canals you see on normal city streets. These type are quite deep some around half a meter deep.
What is impressive is how the people manage to keep the water clean. Most of that water is for food preparation. They even have a schedule for water use. Mornings are for bathing while the rest is for food. Despite the onslaught of visitors, Xidi has remained remarkably clean. Although once in a while you would see piece of paper discarded by the irresponsible arts student.
