Moving on from the Confucius Temple 孔庙

The first of the Three Confucius 三孔 was not that bad and I am on my way to the next one. Visitors do not exit from the entrance but rather a not very obvious gate on one side of the Confucius Temple grounds. From here there was a road which is lined with souvenir stalls. Only then did I realize that there weren’t any vendors inside the Confucius Temple. I was enjoying the temple precisely because they were blissfully absent. But the vendors here don’t seem to be very pushy either. I was not interested in any Confucius memorabilia so I continued on my way.

The path follows the walls of the Confucius Temple which are rather imposing. When you think about it, a temple doesn’t really need walls since it is supposed to be religious in nature. However, the temple was ransacked by invaders before so the people found it prudent to install these protective walls. It has since taken on the appearance of a fortress rather than a temple complete with watch towers.
