When visitors come to Mount Tai, vast majority come through the central staircase. This staircase actually starts from the Dai Temple 岱庙 back in Tai’an City and comes all the way up to the top of Mount Tai. This route has been used by pilgrims for millennia. Emperors would start at the Dai Temple then work their way up the mountain through these very steps. These are indeed very well worn step, as a result, it is quite well maintained.
I was walking my way down the staircase and I keep looking back to see the view. The staircase is one of the most famous points of Mount Tai and it is iconic enough to get featured in the CNY 5 bill. I needed to walk down a fair bit to be able to see most of the staircase. From that point, it looks as if the stairs go straight up, no wonder it scared me into taking the cable car. This is still one of the best parts of a visit to Mount Tai, don’t miss it.
