In the olden days, the Chinese seem to have this habit to throwing themselves off cliffs. Back when I visited Mount Emei in Sichuan province, there was a place which was frequented by these people where they would offer themselves as a sacrifice to the gods. Naturally, this practice has been frowned upon, but this was not the only place which has it. Even Mount Tai has a suicide cliff, known as the Life Abandoning Cliff 舍身崖.
Right now there is a fence which will make it not very easy to kill yourself. As a result of so many people killing themselves, a Ming official renamed it Life Loving Cliff 爱身崖. Well, the name didn’t really stick obviously since this is still called Life Abandoning Cliff. This is a pity since the view here is quite good, killing oneself will only ruin the atmosphere here.
