Mount Tai is undoubtedly the most important mountain in China. According to the Taoist religion, there are five sacred mountains in China for each of the cardinal directions called the Five Great Mountains 五岳. Mount Heng or Hengshan 恒山 in the north, confusingly, Mount Heng or also Hengshan 衡山 in the south, there is a difference in the Chinese character used, Mount Tai or Taishan in the East, Mount Hua or 华山 in the West and Mount Song or Songshan 嵩山 in the center. Of these five great mountains, Mount Tai is considered the greatest of them all.
According to legend, the five great mountains where made from the body of the the creator of the world Pangu 盘古. Mount Tai was borne out of Pangu’s head thus considered the most important of the five. All five of the great mountains are now pilgrimage sites and as a result have been in use for thousands of years. Being the most important one, Mount Tai sees the most traffic, I have already seen a bit of the traffic here at the entrance and it didn’t seem that bad. This was probably because I got here towards the tail end of the tourist season. However, if you do come here after the tourist season, you get discounts off the entrance tickets.
