Inside the Beijing South Railway Station 北京南站
Well, it was finally time to leave Beijing. I normally take the bus to get from one city to another but it seems a little tricky figuring out how to get to my destination. I’ve been to a number of bus stations in Beijing but none of them seemed to go there. So I decided to take the train down south. There was a ticket office a block away from my hostel and I managed to procure tickets easily. This time I would be travelling with a bit more style.

I was to depart from Beijing South Railway Station which was conveniently located at a subway station with the same name on Line 4. I have taken several Chinese trains and I would have to say that I wasn’t really enamored with train travel in this country. However, everything changed when I saw the ultramodern Beijing South Railway Station. This was a place larger than the Beijing National Stadium. It looks more like an airport terminal than a railway station and needless to say I was very impressed. Apart from the Chinese signs and announcements, you would never think you are in China.

There were ticket purchasing counters on the sides of the terminal but since it is so large, it takes some walking to get there. There were comfortable waiting areas near the departure gates but there were too many people milling about so I decided to keep my distance. The railway station was well lit and I understand that there are solar panels installed on top to help generate electricity. The gates themselves were nice and all you have to do it scan them to get in. I seldom treat myself, especially when it comes to transport but I think I would be enjoying this trip!
