When one talks about Beijing one of the foremost landmarks that come to mind is the Forbidden City. This place has been the site of power of dynasties for centuries and it is also the site of some rather well publicized events in recent history which I don’t think I need to mention. I was saving the easy sites for last since this is actually inside the city itself. Hey, the city of Beijing is practically built around the Forbidden City. Now that I am already on my last day in Beijing, the time to visit it is at hand.
To get to the Forbidden City, you can easily take the subway to Tiananmen East 天安门东站 or Tiananmen West 天安门西站 station. It is so big that it spans two subway stations. The underground passways here are very wide to accomodate an insane amount of people during events and they do seem to manage. Security is everywhere and this is understandable, after all what could be a better way to show up on the news than to do something here. After navigating the underground passageway, you would come out somewhere near the entrance. This is where the fun begins.
