When emperors give gifts expect them to be grand. When Emperor Qianlong celebrating his 70th birthday, the Panchen Lama of Tibet paid him a visit in celebration of this occasion. Delighted by this gesture, the Emperor Qianlong ordered the construction of the replica of the residence of the Panchen Lama which was the Tashilunpo Temple in faraway Tibet. Thus was born the Xumifushou Temple whose name means Temple of Happiness and Longevity of the Sumeru Mountain.
Sumeru is the central world mountain of Buddhism and it only emphasizes the importance of this temple. The temple also represents the friendship of the Qing dynasty and Tibet and also represents the start of the development of multi-ethnic state in the Qing dynasty. Such is the importance and respect that the Qing dynasty gave to Tibetan Buddhism. It is little wonder that the Eight Outer Temples surrounding the Mountain Resort were built.
