Probably one of the most fascinating features inside the main building of the Putuozongcheng Temple is the Thousand Buddha Pavillion after all it won’t be a Buddhist temple if it didn’t have a Thousand Buddha Pavillion. In this case, it was made more special. At a protected area inside the main building is a pagoda like tower carved from rosewood soaring five stories high. The pagoda has small arches on its sides in which were carved the likeness of Buddha. Naturally the number of these likenesses number up to a thousand.

The pagoda was given to Emperor Qianlong on the account of his 60th birthday. Now it is a significant part of the Putuozongcheng Temple, so significant that it was blocked off from visitors and it is not easy to even just to observe it. Not much light gets here so it is a wonder how these people of those days used to appreciate this. It is an impressive structure and I wish they would make it more accessible to visitors but I guess this is for the best.
