For all its enormity, it could be easily forgotten that the Mountain Resort in Chengde 避暑山庄 also served at the imperial palace whenever the emperor feels like it, usually when it is hot in Beijing. Although the palace here is nowhere near as grand as the Forbidden City, much of the place here it filled with history. Take the Hall of Refreshing Mists and Waves 烟波致爽 for instance.
The Hall of Refreshing Mists and Waves is one of the most important structures in the Mountain Resort. This served as the official residence of the emperor. The emperor also conducts his business here all in the luxurious and relaxing environment of the Mountain Resort. Emperor Kangxi compiled a list of 36 scenic spots within the Mountain Resort, it shows how busy he was, and the Hall of Refreshing Mists and Waves tops the list. Much of the buildings here are rustic with hardly any effort to give it a renovated touch.
Some of the halls here have been turned into exhibition halls showcasing Chinese porcelain and clothing. Some of them were closed though. Several emperors met their end here maybe preferring to stay and die here than in the Forbidden City. Additionally, the Beijing Treaty was signed here where China lost much territory and sovereignty. This treaty has been a source of national shame for the Chinese ever since.
