Kunming Lake is an artificial lake, this means the builders had free reign on what to incorporate here. Back then, the Chinese city of Hangzhou 杭州 was already known as a beautiful place because of the famous West Lake 西湖. From West Lake’s Su Causeway 西湖苏堤 came the inspiration for Kunming Lake’s West Causeway. The causeway provides a path for visitors to traverse the lake on land. At the same time the West Causeway still allows water to pass through thus it is connected by several bridges, some of which were already previously featured.
The waters of the lake also serve a more practical purpose in the supplying of fresh water to the nearby areas. The water passes through a small canal where it is then purified for drinking. The water here is a strangely intense green color owed to the amount of plant life living here. Being a critical source of water, these parts are off limits to visitors.
