I finally shook off the maddening crowds at the Summer Palace at Beijing, they were surprisingly gathered in small places most around Wanshou Hill. So if you managed to walk beyond Wanshou Hill you will be rewarded with a wonderful sense of peace just by walking around Kunming Lake. It is possible to walk around Kunming Lake but it may take a while since it is surprisingly large. You can walk through tree covered lanes and through elegant bridges to better appreciate the imperial park.
At the Bridge of Pastoral Poems, you can look back at Wanshou Hill. This is arguably one of the best places to photograph Wanshou Hill with the prominent Tower of Buddhist Incense. Amazingly, I was the only one there so there was no pressure taking photos of the wonderful scene. My only gripe is that mist is quite visible which lowers my contrast. I would say I was already lucky enough for it not to be raining and lucky enough not to have to compete with hundreds of other tourists for this photo.
