At the end of the trail at Wanshou hill is one of the most prominent landmarks here in the Summer Palace. Upon entry into the palace grounds one cannot miss the striking Tower of Buddhist Incense 佛香阁. The tower is a masterful example of Chinese architecture, not to mention a striking backdrop to many a photo. The emperors sure know how to make an imperial garden. The tower was building during the time of Emperor Qianlong 乾隆, an Emperor who will figure prominently in this series about China.
The tower was burned down by foreign troops and reconstructed again by Emperor Guangxu 光绪 in its original design. The eight sided tower is three stories high and houses a thousand handed statue of Buddha. Unfortunately, it was forbidden to take photos inside the tower. The location of the tower on top of Wanshou hill only emphasizes the importance and beauty of this tower.
