I woke up early the following morning hoping to get few last photos before leaving Cameron Highlands. There is still work the following day and I needed to get back before then. One of the nearest points of interest were these charming little buildings on top of the hill very near my guest house. The place is called Sekolah Kebangsaan Convent or SK Convent. I would give you one guess as to what it was before.

In the British times, it was a Catholic convent which occupied an excellent location overlooking the town. After the British left, the convent was converted into a school. The name of the building means Convent National School. Although most of the building still retains much of its Catholic heritage, there is still a statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the school grounds, and there are flowers offered to her every morning. I doubt the school is a Catholic school at all, most especially when I had a look at the school’s organizational structure.

It is a rather ironic change, although it is by no mean unique in this part of the world. After all, Singapore has a few examples of this. I’m just grateful that they retained the original building and have continuously maintained it. After all, this is already part of their heritage, it would be a shame to throw it all away.
